Ex-Scan UK - Ultrasound

What scans can we perform?

We carry out a range of examinations

Abdominal - (Liver,gall Bladder etc.)
Pelvis - (Uterus, Ovaries etc.)
Renal Tract - (Kidney, Bladder Ureters etc.)
Vessels -(Carotids, aorta etc.)
Obstetric

Musculoskeletal -
(Shoulder, hands, soft tissues etc.)

How should I prepare for my examination?

We do ask patients to wear loose fitting comfortable clothes, preferably a two-piece outfit.

Different examinations require different preparations and therefore any instructions relevant to your examination will be given to you prior to your appointment.

What will happen during the examination?

You may be asked to undress and to wear a patient gown to make scanning easier. You will be asked to lie on an examination couch and it will be necessary to remove clothing/the gown from around the area to be scanned.

The Consultant Radiologist/Sonographer will then place some cool gel onto the area of interest this helps an image to be formed by reducing any air between the ultrasound probe and skin. The probe will be held lightly against the area of interest and moved around to visualise organs and any pathology.

You may be asked to hold your breath for a matter of seconds whilst an image is obtained, this is usually only necessary when imaging the abdominal organs. You may be asked to move e.g. roll onto one side or the other, to improve visualisation of certain organs.

Sometimes it can be difficult to visualise all the pelvic organs and therefore it may be necessary to proceed to a trans-vaginal scan. During this scan an ultrasound probe (please see picture below) is covered with a protective cover and placed in the vagina. Most patients do not experience pain during this scan as there is no requirement for a speculum to be used. This examination will only be carried out with your consent and only when absolutely necessary.

How long does the scan take?

The scan should take approximately between 15-30 minutes per area depending on what is being scanned, however we do ask that you leave a little longer.

How do I get my results?

The results are typed on the same day of the scan and therefore are dispatched within 24 hours of you having your scan. These are sent direct to the referring clinician. Ex-Scan UK cannot release any results direct to yourself .

How do I make an appointment for an Ultrasound scan?

All patients need to be referred by a medical practitioner. This also applies to screening tests, as further tests may be required, and results may need to be discussed further.

Obstetric scans can be requested directly by the patient. It is advised that you inform your midwife/clinician of your ultrasound examination and results. We will forward on results of scans to your midwife if you require. Should any abnormalities be detected the Sonographer will discuss these findings with you and forward results directly to your midwife for review and follow up to discuss the findings.

Will I get my Ultrasound images?

If you are having an obstetric scan we can provide you with a image of your baby; however no other ultrasound images are released.

Are there any limitations of Ultrasound?

All non invasive investigations have limitations, these are dependent mainly on patient factors and the area being scanned.

How much does it cost?

If you require an ultrasound scan please feel free to contact the office to confirm the costs for your specific examination.
