The Animal MRI Scanning Centre

Ex-Scan UK is a MRI Scanning Company, which specialises in the open MRI Scanners. It provides scanning facilities for humans and animals at a number of locations, and now is proud to present its open Veterinary Scanner.

In a modern Veterinary practice 70% or more of the animals and pets that are seen will require investigation by way of some sort of imaging procedure to help make a diagnosis and aid treatment.
The tools available for imaging include radiography, ultrasonography, CAT scanning (Computer Assisted Tomography) and MRI scanning (Magnetic Resonance Imaging).

MRI scanning is one of the most advanced tools available for the investigation of soft tissue injury and pathology. It is expensive and not widely available in veterinary medicine. This fact alone explains its under use in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

MRI scans provide cross-sectional imaging in any plain, with no superimposition of overlying structures. The soft tissue detail and resolution is extremely good. The image is produced using characteristics of the tissues which are not utilised by any other imaging modality.

The absence of ionising radiation in MRI provides a safer working environment for both the patient and staff. Having an MRI unit on-site allows the system to be available at all times, rather than having to book the scan at another site or mobile scanner unit.

MRI scanning works on the simple principle of hydrogen atoms in the tissues, as most tissues contain water. Water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen therefore all tissues will give an MRI signal, the signal will be determined by the water content of the tissue.

The MRI scan is performed with a large magnet and receiver coils. A powerful computer receives the signals and processes them into pictures. These pictures show the anatomy and structure of the tissues.

If there is any tissue damage or pathology there is an alteration of the water content of the tissue which is demonstrated as an altered signal on the pictures produced by the computer.

Pets and animals need to be sedated or be asleep during the scan. With the Vet MRI scanner it is easy to monitor the animal during the MRI scan as they are easily accessible, therefore reducing any risks for the patient.

mri scanning for animals

The MRI Scan of each body part takes about 45 minutes to complete.
The availability of the MRI Scanner will enable the practice on site and those in the surrounding areas to be able to offer an MRI service to their clients in order to diagnose and treat animals more efficiently and effectively.

Today MRI is the preferred modality of imaging of any kind of soft tissue and this method of choice will image trauma and pathologies of the central nervous system, spine, joints and other soft tissues.
